Our History
The Leelanau Conservation District was organized in 1943. That year 131 farmers started conservation practices. The total income was $100.00 from the county Board of Supervisors. In 2007, we provided services to over 3000 adults and over 800 students. With no paid staff until 1968, the district now has three employees and two contracted staff: Employees include Executive Director, Buzz Long, Erosion Control Technician, Steve Christensen and Administrative Assistant, Susan Cordes. Contracted staff are Forester/Education Coordinator, Daniel Schillinger and Plant Specialist, Chris Garthe.
